Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Demonstrations in Skopje and throughout Macedonia on March 21, 2017
The U.S. Embassy in Skopje informs U.S. citizens that a demonstration is expected to take place in Skopje today at around 5:00 p.m. Due to EU Commissioner Hahn’s visit to Skopje, the Ministry of Interior expects an increase in the number of demonstrators today. Demonstrators from surrounding cities may be transported to Skopje to participate.
It is possible that demonstrators may gather at different venues and times today. “United for Macedonia” is also calling for protests in 43 towns throughout the country tonight.
Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. You should avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.
Review your personal security plans; remain aware of your surroundings, including local events; and monitor local news stations for updates. Maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.
